Owls Post Composite 3.73 Team G.P.A.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Rice soccer team posted the eighth-highest team grade point average among all Division I programs on the way to receiving the United Soccer Coaches' Team Academic Award, the organization announced on Thursday (Oct. 3).
United Soccer Coaches, the national coaches association for college programs, recognizes exemplary performance in the classroom with its annual Team Academic Award. On Thursday the organization honored 990 women's and men's teams from all divisions college soccer for maintaining a composite grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster during the 2018-19 academic year.
Rice registered the No. 8 GPA among Division I women's programs with an eye-opening 3.73 for a total of 25 student-athletes on the roster. The women's programs from the University of Cincinnati and Saint John's University shared the national lead with identical 3.79 GPAs.
"It is an honor for our program to be recognized by the coaches' association for the work and success the student-athletes achieve in the classroom," said Rice head coach Brian Lee. "There are close to 340 Division I women's soccer programs across the country and to have a roster of 25 players record the No. 8 team GPA overall would be impressive enough, but to do so in the Rice curriculum elevates the accomplishment to an even higher level.
"I am proud of the players in this program," coach Lee added. "I thank them for their continued commitment as student-athletes. I also want to thank our academic counseling staff, particularly the hard work of Kendal Moore who is our primary academic liaison. Congratulations to all the Team Academic Award recipients, and their respective student-athletes."
The Rice soccer team is next in action with a Conference USA home game on Sunday (Oct. 6). Start time vs. UAB is set for 1 pm at Holloway Field.
