DALLAS – Rice junior outside hitter Nicole Lennon and senior libero Lee Ann Cunningham took home the Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, the league office announced on Monday.
The No. 19 Owls (18-1, 7-0) ran their winning streak to nine straight this weekend with road sweeps at Marshall and Louisiana Tech. Rice recorded their eighth straight sweep on Sunday and extended their school record of sets without a loss to 25 in a row.
Lennon, who earned her sixth Offensive Player of the Week award this season, totaled 41 kills over six sets (6.83 kps) while hitting .337 from the outside on the weekend and surpassed 300 kills for the season. The Katy, Texas native recorded her third 20-plus kill performance in a three-set match this season with 23 kills (.302) in Rice's Friday sweep at Marshall. Lennon backed up that performance with 18 kills while hitting a sensational .394 in a win at Louisiana Tech.
Cunningham led the Owls' defensive efforts this weekend with 34 digs over six frames (5.67 dps), which included a match-high 24-dig performance at Marshall. The 20-plus dig effort was Cunningham's sixth of the season. The Louisville, Ky. native also recorded 10 more digs in Rice's victory over the Lady Techsters.
The Owls will be in search of their 10th consecutive victory this Sunday when they host FIU in a rematch of last year's C-USA Championship. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Tudor Fieldhouse.
