Rice earns seven victories at Leonard Hilton Invitational
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls Women's Track & Field team made their 2019 debut on Friday, collecting seven victories and four personal-best marks at the Leonard Hilton Invitational.
After a stellar 2018 season, junior jumper Michelle Fokam picked up where she left off with a big performance in the long jump. The Katy, Texas native won the long jump with a new personal best mark of 6.39m (20-11.75), which is currently the fourth-best distance in the nation.
Junior sprinter Hannah Jackson was the top collegiate finisher in the 60m dash with a time of 7.62, placing third overall after qualifying with a mark of 7.60.
The Owls also picked up two other victories in the field, highlighted by a sensational debut from freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdòttir. The Iceland native won her Rice debut in the shot put with a throw of 15.64m (51-03.75), which ranks 26th in the nation and is the top throw by a freshman so far this season.
Junior vaulter Kylie Swiekatowski picked up a PR in the pole vault, claiming the title by clearing 3.80m (12-05.50).
Junior Hannah Bablak won the 800m (2:25.03) while Loren Goddard took gold in the 3000m (10:52.39).
Four Rice freshmen (Ashley Messineo, Kendall Brice, Ryann Helmers, Caitlin Wosika) took gold in the distance medley relay, turning in the 36th-best time (12:45.37) in the country.
