San Antonio, Texas — Rice fired an even par 288, the second-best round of the day, to improve five spots and tie for seventh-place at the Lone Star Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,435-yard TPC San Antonio.
"The team did a great job of competing today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "They know they can play with any of those teams and they showed it today by posting the second-best round of the day. It really gives us some momentum heading into next week at Colorado State."
Sophomore Jake Benson and junior Nicholas Duggan tied for 16th-place at three-over par after firing rounds of 69 and 70, respectively. Benson led the Owls with his second career round in the 60's and his ninth round of par or better. It is also his third career top-20 finish. Duggan recorded his 12th career round of par or better and his third career top-20 finish.
Sophomore Rishi Kejriwal finished nine-over par in a tie for 48th-place after carding a 75. Senior Mason Weld posted a 76 to tie for 52nd-place at 10-over par. Senior Grant Rogers tied for 59th-place at 11-over par after shooting a 74 and freshman Austin Escamilla, playing in his first career tournament, shot an 83 to finish in 79th-place at 19-over par.
Host UTSA won the tournament at two-over par, two strokes in front of Arkansas State. UTSA's Sean Meehan and Arkansas State's Zan Luka Stirn tied for medalist honors at four-under par.
Rice returns to the links next week when it travels to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Ram Masters Invitational, Sept. 17-18.
