The tournament has been shortened to 36 holes due to rain
San Antonio, Texas — Rice is in 12th-place at the season-opening Lone Star Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,435-yard TPC San Antonio.
Due to rain, the tournament has been shortened to 36 holes. The Owls, who had to sit through a four-hour delay, opened the tournament with a 311, 23-over par.
"The conditions were difficult with the rain all day and a tough course," said head coach Justin Emil. "It's only one round of golf among many in a season. We'll bounce back tomorrow."
Junior Nicholas Duggan leads the Owls after shooting a 77 to sit in a 42nd-place tie. Sophomores Jake Benson and Rishi Kejriwal and senior Mason Weld are tied for 49th-place after all carding a 78.
Freshman Austin Escamilla, playing in his first career tournament as an individual, is tied for 68th-place after posting an 80 and senior Grant Rogers shot an 81 to tie for 73rd-place.
Host UTSA leads the tournament at one-over par, two strokes in front of Arkansas State. UTSA's Sean Meehan leads the tournament at four-under par, two strokes in front of Zan Luka Stirn of Arkansas State.
The final round begins tomorrow with Rice teeing off at 8 a.m. The Owls are paired with UT-Arlington, McNeese State and South Alabama.
