Former Army assistant
Former Army multi-event and pole vault coach Jon Hill has been named the newest assistant coach for Rice women's track & field, head coach Jim Bevan announced on Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2018).
"We're excited to have Jon on our staff," Bevan said. "He brings a lot of experience and he comes with a great pedigree, having been mentored by the great Kebba Tolbert (USATF) and having worked at West Point for six years. I think he brings many factors that we will benefit from and has a wealth of experience coaching multiple events as well as being a multi-event coach. He truly sought this job out and wants to be here, which says a lot about his desire to be a Rice Owl."
"I instantly felt a connection with Rice University and Coach Bevan," said Hill. "I was so impressed by the coaches I met, the administration and support staff and of course the women on the team. Rice is well known as an elite academic institution, but that commitment only enhances the expectations of the athletic programs; Rice doesn't settle for average. I'm excited to learn and follow Coach Bevan's lead. He has a strong reputation in the coaching community as a world class coach and an honest, genuine man who does things the right way. Rice attracts only the most gifted and dedicated student-athletes. I'm eager to contribute in any way I can.
A native of Oregon, Hill spent the previous six years at West Point where he coached pole vault and combined events, before being promoted to jumps in 2013-14. He would later add sprints/hurdles in 2016. Under his guidance, Army set school records in the men's/women's pole vault, men's 60m, men's 100m, men's 200m, men's high jump, men's and women's 4x100, men's and women's 4x400 relay, and the women's triple jump.
In addition to his collegiate résumé, Hill has coached with USATF Level I and II (jumps, sprints, hurdles & relays, and combined events). Hill has expanded his leadership experience by serving as a USATF Northeast Region Coaching Education Coordinator and also assisted with USATF as part of the Inland NW Association Chair of Coaching Education and Youth track.
Prior to West Point, Hill spent four years as an assistant at Eastern Washington, where he coaches jumps/combined events and pole vault. During his tenure, Eastern Washington broke school records 11 times and exceeded the team's best finish in school history each season.
