SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Rice sophomores Michelle Fokam and Hannah Jackson each punched tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships by placing 10th and 12th, respectively, on Saturday at the NCAA West Prelims.
Fokam, from Katy, Texas, improved with each attempt at Hornet Stadium, highlighted by her third attempt of 13.20m (43-03.75). Fokam added to her sensational sophomore resume, which included triple jump tiles at the Conference USA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, as well as the long jump competitions.
This will mark the fourth straight year that the Owls have had at least one athlete in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Daisy Ding competed in the event from 2015-17 while Cybil Obiozor joined Ding in 2015.
Jackson, from Sulphur, La., placed fifth in her heat by ting her own school record time of 23.19 and had to wait out two more heats to see if she qualified. She was seeded 13th going into the quarterfinals and ended up being one of three athletes to earn berths by having one of the top three times outside of the automatic qualifying athletes.
Fokam will compete in the triple jump in Eugene, Ore. on Saturday, June 9 at 5:40 p.m. (CT) while Jackson will first race in the prelims of the 200m dash on Thursday, June 7 8:14 p.m. (CT).
