
Russell in Third Place in Heptathlon

HOUSTON - Rice sophomore Zinedine Russell recorded two third place finishes while amassing 3121 points in the heptathlon on day one of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships Thursday at Wendel D. Ley Track.
Russell, from Kingstone, Jamaica, established new PR's in three of Thursday's four events. She began the competition with a second place finish of 14.49 in the 100m hurdles to earn 910 points. In the second event of the day, Russell set a PR of 1.66m (5-05.25) to place third in the high jump for 806 points.
Russell followed that performance with another third place effort, this time in the shot put, setting a PR of 11.59m (38-00.25) for an additional 634 points. A victory (26.30) in the second heat of the 200m led to a fifth place finish overall and 771 points, concluding her day with a third PR.
UTEP's Lucia Mokrasova (3364 points) and Middle Tennessee's Qetuwrah Abdullah (3145 points) are currently first and second in the heptathlon, respectively.
The final three events of the heptathlon will resume on Friday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Wendel D. Ley Track. In addition, the Rice women will be competing in the finals of the hammer throw (2 p.m.) and the 10,000m race (9 p.m.).
