HOUSTON — The honors keep coming in for Rice punter Jack Fox as he has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year, awarded by the conference's head coaches.
Fox becomes the first punter in conference history to win the award and is Rice's first individual award winner since Chase Clement was named Most Valuable Player in 2008.
Fox, who was named First Team All-Conference yesterday, led C-USA in punting for the second straight year, averaging 45.5 yards per punt while leading the nation with a school record 3,636 punting yards. His average was second best in the nation among punters with at least 60 punts and ranked eighth national among all punters.
A Ray Guy Award Semifinalist, he led the league with 26 punts of at least 50 yards and 31 punts inside the 20-yard line. Behind Fox, Rice set a school record for net punting (40.11) while placing 18th nationally. He also kept the opposition to a kickoff return average of 16.1, which was sixth in the nation and Rice's lowest since 1999.
"It was pleasure to work with Jack this year," said Rice Associate Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Pete Lembo. "He is a true student of the game, a savvy football player and a versatile specialist. We developed a strong bond in a short period of time. I greatly appreciate his contributions to our special teams success in 2018 and look forward to staying in touch as he moves forward with his career."
At North Texas, he averaged 47.3 yards per punt over seven punts, including a career-best 76-yarder, which is the eighth longest in the country this year. He placed five of them inside the 20 and one inside the 10. His performance at North Texas earned him the Ray Guy Punter of the Week Award.
