Owls Split Double-Dual vs. TCU and Texas A&M
In the team scoring the Owls fell to No. 3 ranked No. 3 ranked Texas A&M 177-111, and coasted to a victory over Big 12 foe TCU, 197-93. Rice head coach Seth Huston liked what he saw.
"I was really pleased with how we stepped-up and competed today," coach Huston said. "We focused what was going on between our lane lines and had some great swims."
Bui was sound and solid against teams from a pair of power-five conferences and some of the best competition the Owls will see all season. The sophomore from Houston (Kempner H.S.) won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.00. She then returned to win the 100-fly over a starting field of 15 other competitors with a steady 55.29.
For good measure Bui swam the butterfly leg of the Owls' 200-medley relay that finished third overall with a time of 1:43.14, but she wasn't Rice's only individual winner. True freshman Becca Evans won the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.51 that was just-off her season best mark at the Hansel Invitational two weeks ago. She also worked her way onto both of the Blue & Gray's top relays.
Rice also had good outings from freshman Marta Cano-Minarro, sophomore Ellery Parish and seniors Hanna Huston and Marie-Claire Schillinger. Schillinger was second in both breaststroke events, recording a 1:02.69 in the 100- and a 2:18.95 in the 200. Huston was second in the rugged 1000-freestyle (10:13.81). Parish was second in the 200-backstroke (2:03.13) to go along with a third place in the 200-free (1:50.33). Cano-Minarro was second overall in the 100-free (52.06) and later swam the lead leg of Rice's sprint relay that finished third (1:35.73).
Rabea Tzenetos and Sarah Nowaski meanwhile scored for the Owls with the team's top finishes in the 100-backstroke (57.16) and 500-freestyle (5:01.86), respectively. The Rice swimmers have short break as the University enters its final exams period for the semester. The Blue & Gray returns to action on December 20 for a Holiday meet at Conference USA for Florida Atlantic.
