Rice Swimmers Win 6-of-13 Events At 10-Team FAU Invitational
At press time no team scores were available for the ten-team women's meet, but Rice was firmly in control. The Blue & Gray won six swim events while no other school had more than two event victories.
Steady as ever, Schillinger was sound and solid posting individual event wins in both the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke with times of 29.21 and 1:02.81, respectively. The senior from Orinda, Calif., was also third in the 50-yard butterfly (26.35, behind teammate Becca Evans' second place 26.11).
Senior Rabea Tzenetos continued her strong showings by winning the 100-backstroke (57.60) and placing fifth in the 50-back (27.11) among a field of 33 entries. Sophomore Ellery Parish led a Rice scoring barrage by winning the 200-freestyle (1:52.78) while Claire Therien (1:54.39) was third and Sydney Franzen (1:54.97) was fourth.
"Good day for the Rice Owls!" exclaimed Rice head coach Seth Huston. "We finished out a challenging week of training with some strong performances today. Marie-Claire owned the breaststroke events and we won two of three relays. Wins by Ellery and Rabea added to our victory total."Becca Evans returned to finish second overall among 30 entries in the 50-freestyle (24.15). Sophomore Brittany Bui was fourth in the 100-butterfly (56.77) and third in a 100-IM (59.91) where the strokes were swam reverse order. To put an exclamation point on the team aspect of the meet, Rice also won two relays with firsts in both the 100-medley relay (47.73) and a unique 400-IM relay (3:58.58).
The Blue & Gray next gets some time-off during the Holidays, but is scheduled to be back on campus training starting on Dec. 31. Rice's next competition is a C-USA dual meet at league rival North Texas on Jan. 11, 2019. The Owls then face powerhouse foes Arkansas and SMU in a Dallas double-dual meet on Jan. 12.
