The NCAA released its annual report tracking the academic success of student-athletes at all levels of competition on Tuesday and Rice once again ranks among the best institutions in the nation in their Graduation Success Rate (GSR) tabulations.
Six of Rice's athletic teams (golf, soccer, swimming, volleyball, women's basketball and women's tennis) graduated 100% of their student-athletes who enrolled from 2008 to 2011. The rate for all student-athletes over this same time frame was 93%, which was tied for 10th nationally with the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota and Tulane University. The overall national average for student-athletes was 88%.
"The academic success of our student-athletes remains the top priority for Rice Athletics," said Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard. "While we are pleased with this year's results, we also are focused on the success of every student who wears the Rice uniform. Our goal is for each of our programs to be recognized for their athletes' success in the classroom."
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate did. The federal rate counts as an academic failure any student who leaves a school, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate look at student-athlete success.
This year marks the 17th year of GSR data that have been collected. The NCAA began collecting GSR data with the entering freshman class of 1995. The latest entering class for which data are available is 2011.
Rice ranked eighth overall in the federal graduation rate for all student-athletes (81%), while Rice's overall student body was ranked sixth (92%). Rice's female student-athletes rank second in the nation with a federal rate of 96%. The Owls posted the sixth highest federal rate among African-American students (76%), while the football team was tied for seventh (77%).
