Swimmers Blaze To Dual-A-Pool-Ooza Team Title
Rice blazed through the 31-event, two-day competition winning all three of its scheduled dual meets. After defeating Tulane 132-89 on Friday, the Owls followed a 107-95 win over meet host Denver in a Saturday morning session with a 123-77 victory over defending Conference USA champion FIU later in the evening.
Rice swept the 200-freestyle in both of Saturday's sessions with 1-2 finishes. Lindsay Mathys (1:52.91) and Ellery Parish (1:53.23) were the top two finishers in the morning. Marta Cano-Minarro (1:51.86) and Parish (1:53.67) were 1-2 for the Blue & Gray in session two. Parish's two second place finishes, both to her own Rice teammates, were part of a big-scoring Saturday as she also won the 200-backstoke (2:04.08).
Senior Marie-Claire Schillinger won the 100-breaststroke (1:03.88) and slightly-rare 50-yard edition of the same event (29.43). There was also a 50-yard butterfly Saturday, won by Owl sophomore Brittany Bui with a time of 29.43 in the Denver dual meet.
True freshman Shannon Jelley led a 1-2 Rice finish with Mathys in the 200-butterfly with times of 2:05.41 and 2:05.69, respectively. The Owl distance swimmers were big contributors all weekend. Claire Therien swam a season-best 10:26.46 to lead a Rice charge in the 1,000-free.
The Owls closed out the Dual-A-Pool-Ooza winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Cano-Minarro, Becca Evans, Harper Gillentine and Mathys won the event with a season-best mark of 3:29.23.
As a team Rice swimming remained unbeaten through its first four meets of the season. The Owls are next in action at the annual Phill Hansel Invitational Meet on Nov. 16-18 across town at the University of Houston.
