RICHMOND, VA-The 47th ranked Rice women's tennis team closed out an unbeaten weekend swing in Virginia by blanking the VCU Rams, 4-0 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on Sunday.
With the Rams only able to field five players, the Owls only needed to pick up one win in doubles to pick up the first point of the day, which Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang provided with a 6-2 win. After picking up a default point at the sixth singles position, the Owls closed out the final two clinching points with wins by Zhang and Alison Ho.
Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said she was pleased to see her team not let the circumstances impact their performance on the courts.
"I thought our team did a nice job staying focused today," Schmidt said. "It was good to get all those first sets in singles and then carry the momentum to the finish line."
The win improved the Owls season mark to 12-5 and closes out their regular season road schedule. They will wrap up the 2017 spring schedule with a three-match homestand that opens when they host USF at 1 p.m. on Friday.
