HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Rice is in fourth-place after two rounds of the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 6,902 yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
The Owls are one-over par after carding a 278-291/569. The 278 is the lowest score since firing a 274 in the final round of the 2011 Border Olympics
"Today was a long day," said head coach Justin Emil. "After an hour and ten minute lightning delay it was a race to against the setting sun. We played really well in the morning but it was a bit of a struggle in the afternoon. Tomorrow will be a lot of fun as the course is yielding a lot of birdies, which gives us a chance."
Sophomore Will Voetsch is tied for ninth-place at one-under par after shooting 71-70/141. His 36-hole score of 141 is a new career-high and his two rounds of par or better give him 12 for his career.
In his first career tournament, freshman Trevor Brown is tied for 17th-place at one-over par. Brown opened the tournament with a 68 before closing with a 75.
Senior Kevin Reilly, playing as an individual, is tied for 27th-place at two-over par. He opened with a 68 and before closing with a 76. The 68 is the 31st round of par or better in his career and the 12th round in the 60's.
Freshman Nicholas Duggan and juniors Mario Carmona and Mitchell Meissner are tied for 33rd-place three-over par. Duggan carded a 68-77, Carmona posted a 71-74 and Meissner shot a 73-72.
Louisiana-Monroe leads the tournament at 11-under par, eight strokes in front of Southern Miss. ULM's Andoni Etchenique leads the individual tournament at nine-over par, four strokes ahead of ULL's Aron Juliusson.
