HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Rice shot an even par 284 to finish one-over par in fifth-place at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 6,902 yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
The fifth-place finish is the best ever for Rice at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
"We were so close today to posting a stellar final round," said head coach Justin Emil. "We still had a solid start to the season. It'll be good to have a quick turnaround for the team as we head up to Colorado."
Junior Mitchell Meissner fired a final round 68 to tie for 12th-place at even par. It was his 13th career round of par or better and his second career round in the 60's. It is also his fourth career top 20 finish.
In his first career tournament, freshman Nicholas Duggan closed with a 69 to finish one-over par and tied for 17th-place.
Sophomore Will Voetsch tied for 22nd-place at two-over par after carding a final round 74. His 54-hole score of 215 set a new career-high.
Junior Mario Carmona and freshman Trevor Brown tied for 43rd-place at five-over par. Carmona posted a final round 73 while Brown shot a 75. Senior Kevin Reilly, playing as an individual, shot a 76 to finish in a 53rd-place tie at seven-over par.
Louisiana-Monroe won the tournament at eight-under par, four strokes in front of Southern Miss. UTSA's Zander Lozano and WKU's Billy Tom Sargent tied for medalist honors at five-under par.
Rice returns to the links next week when it travels to Fort Collins, Colo. for the Ram Masters Invitational, played Sept. 19-20.
