Ninth ranked Texas A&M fought off an early test for the doubles point and then used straight set wins on courts one, two and six to post a 4-0 win over the visiting Rice Owls at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station on Sunday night.
After the Aggies opened pursuit of the doubles point with a 6-0 win on court three, the two squads were tied 4-4 on the remaining two courts before A&M was able to break through with a 6-4 win on court one.
Senior Adam Gustafsson was the only Owl to win his opening set when singles play began, but he saw his bid to score a point for the Owls foiled when Harrison Adams struck back to win the second set while his teammates closed out the match with wins.
The meeting with the Aggies was the first of seven consecutive duals for the Owls against ranked competition, including three (No. 41 Drake, No. 70 William and Mary and No. 8 Texas Tech) next weekend in the Rice Invitational.
