David Warren and Jake Hansen picked up wins in singles, but 31st ranked San Diego handed the 29th ranked Rice men's tennis team a 4-0 defeat at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego on Tuesday.
The Toreros opened strongly, racing to the doubles point with quick wind at one and three and carried that momentum over into singles, taking straight set wins on one, two and six to end the match.
Rice freshman Jake Hansen was one game away from a win when the match was clinched, while junior David Warren ran his record in tiebreakers this spring to 6-0 to win his first set before seeing his match end with him holding a 3-2 lead in the second set.
The Owls will face 37th ranked Stanford on Thursday prior to opening play in the 127th Pacific Coast Doubles Championship this weekend at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
