Trio Lead Owls to Saturday Sweep

Adam Gustafsson delivered a pair of clinching points and joined Tommy Bennett and David Warren with a pair of pair singles wins while Rice shook off challenges for both doubles points post 4-0 wins over UAB and Southern Miss on the first day of action in the 2016 C-USA Showcase at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday.
In the opener against the Blazers, Rice needed late spurts on courts one and three to grab the doubles point. In the nightcap, the Owls were pushed to a tiebreaker on court two before emerging with the first point of the match.
Warren picked up the second point for the Owls in identical fashion, winning each second set by 6-0. Bennett added the third point in each match, picking up a win on court two in the opener and court one in the finale. Gustafsson followed closely after in each case to deliver the fourth point and end the match.
Rice will look to complete an unbeaten weekend when they wrap up round robin play on Sunday with a dual against UTSA at 3 p.m. The Roadrunners dropped matches to Southern Miss and UAB on Saturday.
