Tommy Bennett and David Warren saw their rally fall short as Michigan's Jathan Malik and Kevin Wong held on for a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (8) win in the second round of the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing New York on Thursday.
The Rice duo, who earned a berth by winning the consolation round of the ITA All American last month, entered action as the third seed and earned a first round bye and were one of three of the top four seeds to fall on Thursday.
Jathan Malik, who is the older brother of Rice junior Jamie Malik, and Wong advanced by winning a three-set win earlier in the day. The Wolverine pair started quickly, taking the first set, but Bennett and Warren stormed back to even the match and force a third-set tiebreaker. They jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the tiebreaker, only to fall 10-8.
Bennet and Warren will be back in action on Friday in the consolation round when they take on Florida's Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen at 5 p.m.
