After grinding out a rugged semifinal win early in the day, Tommy Bennett and David Warren downed the top-ranked doubles team in the country in straight sets to win the main draw consolation at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Sunday.
The tandem of Rice seniors dispatched of Oklahoma State's Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe 6-4, 6-2 to complete their run through the consolation round in which they lost only one set over four matches.
With the win, Bennett and Warren earned a spot in the ITA Indoor National Intercollegiate Championships, to be held at the USTA Billy Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, November 3-8. They become the first Rice men's doubles team to qualify since the Richard and William Barker in 2002 and 2003.
Bennett and Warren, who opened the fall tournament season ranked eighth nationally, shook off a tiebreak lost in the first semifinal set to Stanford's Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski and post a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 1-0 (7) win, setting up the meeting with the Cowboys duo, which was ranked first in the Oracle/ITA national rankings.
