
Malik and Rutledge Advance at ITA Regional

Jamie Malik and Eric Rutledge advanced in singles and picked up a win in doubles to lead the Rice men's tennis team in opening round action at the 2016 ITA Texas Regional Presented by Oracle in Ft. Worth on Friday.
Malik, who is seeded 15th and earned a first round by, advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-3; 6-2 win over Jhonatan Gonzalez of Texas-Arlington. Rutledge picked up a quick advancement to the round of 32 when Daniel Armengol of Texas-Arlington was forced to withdraw after an injury with Rutledge leading 2-1 in the opening set.
Rice's other singles entry, Henrik Munch, lost a three-set match to Joshua Sheehy of Abilene Christian, 7-5; 2-6; 6-4.
The duo opened their first day of action with an 8-5 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Kevin Bettendroffer and Paul Cook. The 14th seeded Owls will take on Texas Tech's 6th seeded pairing of Ronit Bisht and Connor Curry.
Doubles play will kick off day two of action in Ft. Worth a 8:30 at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU.
