
Owls Shift Focus to All-American After Invite

Freshman Gerardo closed out a successful weekend at the Rice Invitational by winning his final match on Sunday to close out a 10-7 weekend for the Owls in singles action at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Meanwhile in Tulsa, Oklahoma, four other Owls will take to the courts on Monday in the qualifying round of the ITA All American.
Penchyna bested Michael Nguyen of Army, 6-3, 6-0 to finish the weekend 3-1 in the B singles flight. Teammates Jamie Malik, Henrik Munch and Emanuell Llamas each were 2-2 while Oscar Janglin was 1-0 before withdrawing.
Sophomore transfer Eric Rutledge opened play for the Owls at the All American, winning three matches in the pre-qualifiying round before falling to Texas' Christian Sigsgaard, 6-3, 6-3.
Rutledge and Jake Hansen will be in action on Monday in the qualifying round in doubles, facing Ruben Alberts-Jakob Amilon, of UNLV at 12:30. Hansen, Tommy Bennett and David Warren will compete in the qualifying round of singles at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. Hansen and Warren take the court at 8 a.m. on Monday. Hansen will take on Filip Bergev of California while Warren faces Michael Genender of Stanford. Bennett opens against Notre Dame's Alex Knight at 10:30.
