TUSCALOOSA, AL - The Rice Owls men's cross country team placed eighth among 24 competing university teams at Friday's Alabama Crimson Classic.
The Owls were led by junior Marco Ruiz who crossed the finish line in 25:21 to earn 21 points. It marked the third straight race that the Phoenix, Ariz. native was the Owls' top runner. Rounding out the Owls top five was freshman Adolfo Carvalho (43rd-25:41.1), Imran Bell (44th-25:41.2), Matt Calem (57th-25:52) and Griffin Lee (95th-26:20).
"We ran really well today," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "Marco ran a smart, solid race from start to finish in an outstanding field. Our 2-3-4 runners packed very well. And the outcome was a good for one us. We came out ahead of some talented schools, in all just a very solid team effort."
Rice finished ahead of the likes of Tennessee, LSU, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Houston.
