
Owls Hold Firm in Jim West Intercollegiate Finale

BASTROP, Texas -- Rice University men's golf wrapped up its final regular season tournament in 10th place at the Jim West Intercollegiate at Wolfdancer Golf Club on Tuesday. The Owls notched a 293-299-294--886 (+22) to tie with Florida Gulf Coast. Rice turns its attention to the Conference USA Tournament at the end of the month as the team looks to repeat as champion.
James Lee matched a career low with a 69 in the opening round and went on to lead the Owls with a 69-76-73--218 (+2). The junior tied for 13th place to mark his best finish of the season. He sank four birdies in the first round and two each in the following rounds.
Kevin Reilly followed in a tie for 30th with a 74-72-75--221 (+5). The sophomore carded 10 birdies at the event, including four in the second round and three each in the others.
Mitchell Meissner regained his early form on Tuesday with a 71-78-74--223 (+7). The rookie placed 37th overall after sinking five of his eight birdies on Monday morning.
Senior Tommy Economou matched Reilly for the team lead with 10 birdies with four each in the latter rounds and claimed 53rd place with a 79-73-75--227 (+11).
Alex Levy improved each round with an 81-79-72--232 (+16) to take 63rd place. The sophomore increased his birdie total each round as well to notch three in Tuesday's final round as he matched his season scoring low.
St. Mary's won the team title with an 856 (-6), narrowly edging No. 35 Sam Houston State by one stroke. Stephen F. Austin finished third, another eight strokes back.
SFA's Blake Pugh took home the individual medal with a 207 (-9), two strokes up on Zach Cabra (Sam Houston) and Pep Angles (Central Arkansas).
The Owls have the rest of the month to prepare for their title defense at the C-USA Championship. The tournament runs from April 26-29 at Texarkana Country Club. Stroke play begins on April 26.
