UC Davis' James Wade battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to win the last three games in the decisive third set to give the 70th ranked Aggies a 4-3 win over No. 75 Rice on Thursday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, California.
"This was a very tough result to come away with," Rice head coach Efe Ustundag said. "We showed a lot of energy to bounce back from a loss in doubles and really seemed to have things going our way. We had the match on our racquet, but we could not close it out."
Davis grabbed the early lead by taking the doubles point with a tight 8-6 win on court two. But Rice came out firing in singles to take a 3-1 lead.
Gustavo Gonzalez won his fourth consecutive match, racing to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jess Ross to even the score and Max Andrews and David Warren and Max Andrews followed close behind to move the Owls to within one point of clinching the match.
Davis took control of the matches on courts two and three, but on court one Alla and Wade split the first two sets, setting up the dramatic final set which would decide the match.
Alla jumped out to a 4-1 lead before James rallied to close to 5-4 and then broke Alla twice on his way to winning the last three games to take the match with a 7-5 win in the third.
The Owls will remain in La Jolla over the weekend to compete in the 126th West Coast Doubles tournament. They will be back in dual action on March 15 when they host San Diego at noon as part of a simultaneous dual at the George R. Brown Tennis Center with the Rice women, who will host Memphis.
