
Economou Leads Rice Golf at Lone Star Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Senior Tommy Economou continued his recent string of outstanding play as he carded a career-low round on Monday afternoon to pace Rice University golf at the Lone Star Invitational opening day. The Owls stand tied for 13th place at 296-288--584 (+8) heading into Tuesday's final round at Briggs Ranch Country Club.
Economou posted a two-over 74 with a pair of birdies in the opening round before carding a career-best 68 in the afternoon, including six birdies. He ranks 25th overall with a 142 (-2) through 36 holes.
Junior James Lee followed in 33rd place with a 72-72--144 (E). He holed five birdies on the day in addition to an eagle on the par-four 14th hole to begin his second round. Kevin Reilly posted a 74-74--148 (+4) to rank 57th. The sophomore knocked in four of his six birdies in the second round.
Mitchell Meissner also shot the same score in each of his rounds with a 76-76--152 (+8), ranking him 78th in the field. The rookie tallied three of his five birdies in the morning round. Alex Levy rounded out the squad with a 79-74--153 (+9) to stand 81st with 18 holes to play. The sophomore notched a pair of birdies in each round.
Competing as an individual, Joe Beck III posted a 75-76--151 (+7) with an eagle and birdie in the opening round and four more birdies in the afternoon. The eagle came on the par-five, 510-yard fifth hole. The senior stands tied for 73rd place.
No. 6 Texas Tech leads the field with a 549 (-27), nine strokes ahead of second-place No. 38 Southeastern Louisiana. The Owls are tied with Sacramento State, just two strokes back of 12th-place Bowling Green.
Texas Tech's Hannes Ronneblad holds a one-stroke lead over teammate Clement Sordet at 135 (-9).
Tuesday's final round tees off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
