Natalie Beazant closed out an unbeaten dual career vs. Texas Tech, but her Rice women's tennis teammates could not recover from a hard-fought loss in doubles and dropped a 4-1 decision at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock on Sunday.
After posting a win on court three, the Red Raiders and Owls were in tight battles on the first two courts to decide the first point of the match. Tech grabbed the lead by winning the final two games at two for a 6-4 win and a 1-0 lead.
Beazant raised her career dual singles mark vs. Tech to 9-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-3 win over Kenna Kilgo to knot the score, 1-1, but the Owls could not find any further success as Tech took wins on courts three, four and six to improve to 4-2 on the year.
"That doubles point was hard-fought and I thought we put ourselves in good position to win it but just didn't keep our energy and aggression up enough to seal the deal," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schimdt said. "Kudos to Nat for the way she rebounded from a tough loss yesterday and took care of business today in her singles."
After three consecutive weeks on the road against top 30 opponents, the Owls (1-5) return home for a pair of home matches next weekend. They will host No. 6 Baylor on Friday at 2 p.m. and then Louisiana-Lafayette at noon on Sunday.
