TCU Outlasts Owls
2/22/2015 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
The Rice men's tennis team extended No. 18 TCU to third sets in four of six singles matches, but the Owls saw their hopes for an upset fall short as the Horned Frogs emerged with a 4-1 win at the Galleria Athletic and Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon.
The match between the two former Southwest Conference rivals was moved indoors because of the threat of rain and with only three courts available, the match stretch to nearly four hours before Trevor Johnson scored the last four points in his third set tiebreaker with David Warren to clinch the match with a 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) win at #5 singles.
After TCU captured a straight set win at #1, the tone of the remainder of the day's action was set as the two other opening singles matches each went to three sets.
Freshman Jamie Malik put the Rice by capturing a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Will Stein to cut the margin to 2-1, but the Owls saw their hopes for an upset fall during the final three matches of the day, when the Horned Frogs captured decisive third sets.
