The Rice men's tennis team started fast, but came up one match shy of fashioning their second win of the season over a ranked opponent, dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 48 Texas Tech at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in Starkville, Mississippi on Saturday.
The 75th ranked Owls (3-4) took a 1-0 lead with a strong effort in doubles. They captured the first point of the day with wins on courts two and three. The teams then traded the first singles points before Tech took a pair of three-set wins to capture the match.
After Tech tied the match 1-1 with a win on court two, David Warren improved his record to 5-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Connor Curry to put the Owls up 2-1. Tech responded with a win on three, but junior Adam Gustafsson responded with a win to move the Owls to within one point of a clinch.
Gustafsson ground out an 8-6 tiebreak win to take the first set and then closed out Jolan Cailleau with a 6-2 win in the second set and close out the Owls' scoring for the day.
The Rice men's team returns home to the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Friday to host a doubleheader, facing Texas-Arlington at noon and Lamar at 5 p.m.
