EDMOND, Okla. - Rice University men's golf put together a strong start at the Conference USA Championship at the par-70 Oak Tree Country Club on Sunday, tying for fourth place at 293 (+13). Monday's second round tees off at 8 a.m.
Freshman Kevin Reilly fired out of the gates with an eagle-birdie-eagle combo on his first three holes en route to an even-par 70 and a tie for third place through 18 holes. He accounted for two of the three eagles on the day
Tommy Economou matched the rookie with a 70 (E) of his own, including birdies on two of his first three holes of play. The junior finished the round with four birdies and closed out the day with 10-straight pars.
Third on the team and 28th overall was senior Landon Michelson, who carded a 75 (+5). He notched four birdies in the round, including a pair on par-3 holes.
James Lee checked in at 44th overall with a 78 (+8). The sophomore tallied one birdie and 10 pars on the afternoon. Freshman Alex Levy carded an 82 (+12) to end the day tied for 60th place. He holed a pair of birdies.
Tulsa leads the pack of 14 teams with a 288 (+8), followed by No. 18 UAB, two strokes back. The Owls and Middle Tennessee are just on Charlotte's heels for third place at 291.
Sixth-place North Texas is three strokes behind Rice and MT.
Tulsa's Logan McCracken leads the individuals with a 67 (-3), one stroke ahead of LA Tech's Victor Lange. Economou and Reilly are tied with three others in third place with 36 holes to play.
Rice tees off beginning at 8 a.m. on the first hole on Monday morning for the second round of play. The Owls are paired with Middle Tennessee and North Texas.
