FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas - Rice redshirt junior Will Firth placed 29th at Friday's NCAA South Central Regional to lead the Owls men's cross country team to a 10th place finish in frigid conditions at Agri Park.
Firth's finish in the 10K race came in a time of 30:30 and was followed not far behind by sophomore teammate Adam Davidson, who placed 32nd with a mark of 30:37. Other finishes by the Owls were freshman Bradley Dohner (78th-31:48), freshman Steve Booker (84th-31:58), freshman Marco Ruiz (32:00), junior Meron Fessahaie (98th-32:11) and junior Aneesh Sampath (112th-32:30).
The Owls suffered some misfortune when a pack of 10 runners collided, causing three of Rice's top runners to suffer injuries but were still able to finish the race despite severe cuts and bruises.
"Today was a physically tough day," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "Our third, fourth and fifth men went down, hard, 125 meters into the race. To their credit they all got up, literally bloody and bruised. After seeing Marco (Ruiz) and Steve's (Booker) wounds when the race was over I am a little amazed they could finish. It was amazing they still ran respectably. Those two, plus Brad (Dohner), did a spectacular job of trying to make something good out of something that could have been a disaster. If those three could have been closer to Will and Adam the Owls would have had a very solid day and I think would have finished quite a few places higher. Sadly sometimes bad luck happens. This is a good team, much better than today showed. Good things are in its future, especially if we get some luck on our side."
Rice finished the meet with 310 team points. Host Arkansas won the meet with 42 points, followed by Texas (51 points) and Lamar (106 points). All seven Owls runners will return for 2015.
