
Owls Weather Long Delay at Miramont Invitational

BRYAN, Texas - A strong storm system held up the start of the Miramont Invitational, but once play began, Rice University men's golf put together a solid first round and wrapped up the day in 10th place at 302 (+14) at the par-72, 7,174-yard Miramont Country Club.
Senior Tommy Economou paced the Owls in 12th place with a 73 (+1), including 13 pars and a pair of birdies.
Junior James Lee tallied an eagle on the par-five ninth hole and tacked on a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish the day in 40th place at 76 (+4). He was matched by sophomore Kevin Reilly, who carded 10 pars and a pair of birdies for a 76 (+4).
Freshman Mario Carmona wrapped up the day in a tie for 51st at 77 (+5), with a birdie and 13 pars on the afternoon. Joe Beck III also finished the round just one stroke back in 51st place with a 77 (+5). The senior holed 11 pars and one birdie over 18 holes.
Three Rice golfers also entered the tournament as individuals, led by rookie Mitchell Meissner, who shot a 76 (+4) to tie his teammates in 40th place. In just his second collegiate outing, he racked up 15 pars in the round.
Jeff Wibawa turned in a 79 (+7) to tie in 65th place. The senior carded a birdie on the par-five first hole. In his first action of the season, junior Trey Johnson posted an 82 (+10) to end the day in a tie for 73rd place. He knocked in back-to-back birdies on the par-four seventh and eighth holes.
With four players ranking in the event's top eight, Houston leads the field at 285 (-3), five strokes ahead of co-host Sam Houston State. Louisiana-Lafayette's Louis Kelly holds a one-stroke lead among individuals with a 69 (-3).
Rice stands one stroke behind Columbia and McNeese State for eighth place, and just two strokes back of ULL for seventh place and three strokes out of fifth heading into Tuesday.
The final round is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday morning.
