Sophomore forward Lauren Hughes scored a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest as the Rice soccer team coasted to a 5-2 Conference USA victory over visiting Old Dominion Friday night at Holloway Field in Houston.
Hughes registered her sixth and seventh goals of the season early in the match, and Rice would go on to build a 4-2 lead by halftime with Owl goals from sophomore Jasmine Isokpunwu and senior Jessica Howard. Howard's first goal in two years came on a night the Rice soccer program honored its senior class in their final Friday night game of the regular season. Junior Gabriela Iribarne added the Blue & Gray's fifth goal in the second half for a 5-2 final.
Rice efficiently matched its season-high in goals on just 15 shots. Owl goalkeeper Amy Czyz registered nine saves as the team improved to 6-7-2 overall and an even 4-4-0 in league play. ODU is now 1-11-3 on the season and 1-5-2 in conference.
The Owls now have just one home game left on the regular season schedule. Rice next hosts longtime C-USA rival East Carolina on Sunday (Oct. 27). Start time for the match is slated for 1 pm at Holloway Field.
