After dropping their first home match of the year on Monday under constant threats of rain, Elizabeth Schmidt's 28th ranked Rice Owls basked in the sunshine on Thursday, returning to their winning ways with a 6-1 win over Texas State at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Thursday.
"Obviously it was good to get back on track after the Illinois match," Schmidt said. "Texas State came in 9-1 and we knew they would make us play to get the win. I was pleased the way that Ana (Guzman) and (Katie) Gater played in doubles. That really set the tone and we were able to go on and win all three doubles matches. It was a nice team victory for us," she added.
After sweeping the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, the Owls were able to quickly put the outcome out of doubt, as Kimberly Anicete, Stephanie Nguyen and Natalie Beazant captured their matches in succession to give Rice a 4-0 lead.
Dominique Harmath and Guzman then wrapped up the Owls scoring with wins at No. 2 and No. 4, while Texas State broke through at No. 3 to make the final score 6-1.
The Owls will hit the road this weekend and open C-USA play with a match on Sunday against 52nd ranked Tulane. They return home next weekend for matches against Missouri on March 31 and Tulsa on April 1. Tennis Match Results
