The Rice men's tennis team settled into the weekend tennis home by downing Loyola Marymount 6-1 in a college dual match that served as a lead-in to both teams participation in the 123rd Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla, California on Thursday. Competition in the doubles event will run through Sunday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
The Owls captured all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead over LMU, and moved out to a 3-1 lead in singles but had to rebound from opening set losses in the other three singles matched to capture each in three sets.
Senior Sam Garforth-Bles shook off a 7-6 loss in his opening set to come back and deliver the match's clinching point with successive 6-4 wins in the next two sets. Michael Nuesslein weathered an opening 6-3 loss to take his match at No. 5 with a third-set win in a tie-breaker. Jonathan Chang rallied from a tie break loss in his first set to close out the match for the Owls.
After the weekend of doubles competition, the Owls will be back in action next Saturday when they host 25th ranked San Diego at 1 pm
