Owls Post Third Straight Shutout

The Rice women's tennis team warded off the distractions of an Homecoming Day crowd celebrating the opening of a new tennis facility to down Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 7-0 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi on Saturday.
" With having so many fans out for the grand opening of their facility, it was a really neat college tennis environment," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said., "Our team played with a lot of heart and really stepped up and embraced any challenge that we were faced with."
The Islanders opened the facility as part of a day-long Homecoming celebration that concluded with a men's basketball game later that night. With an inspired crowd, estimated at 250, in attendance, the Owls quickly moved to dampen the mood by taking the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.
The Owls up the lead to 2-0 after Natlie Beazant's match at #2 singles ended prematurely when Doris Kuselj was forced to retire early in the second set. Kimberly Anicete and Katie Gater followed with straight-set wins to clinch the match.
Dominique Harmath bounced back from a first-set loss to win at #1 singles and freshman Stephanie Nguyen ran her record to 3-0 with a straight set win at #6 to close out the match.
The Owls will return home to host McNeese State at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday, February 4 at 11 a.m.
