The Rice women's tennis team battled blustery winds and unseasonably warm temperatures on their way to a 7-0 blanking of Lamar at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
"These were really tough conditions with all the wind," Owls head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "But I was proud the way the team did not let that have an impact. What I really liked was when Lamar challenged us, we responded."
The Owls grabbed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 by matching 8-3 margins, but Rice's top doubles team of Dominique Harmath and Natalie Beazant found the going, tougher. The Owls top duo, who were unbeaten in play at last weekend's UCF Invitational, were extended to 14 games before downing the Cardinals Carolina Salas/Natalia Mayagoitia, 8-6.
The Owls swept through all six singles matches in straight sets to close out the Cardinals. They will be back on the Jake Hess Courts on Saturday when they host Louisiana-Lafayette at 11 a.m.
"This was a good start today, but we have to refocus quickly and get ready for a very tough match on Saturday," Schmidt stated.
