HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Rice University opened its fall golf season on Monday with the first 36 holes of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate which is being hosted by Conference USA rival Southern Mississippi. The Owls' 589 (+21) has them in 13th place with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
Rice sophomore Jeff Wibawa's two-round 144 (+2) led the squad on Monday. He is currently tied for 32nd. One stroke back of Wibawa is teammate Erik Mayer who shot a 145 (+3) on Monday. Mayer, who is currently tied for 39th.
With Monday's shotgun start, Mayer overcame a seven on the Par 4, ninth hole to begin his senior season. He was +5 through four holes before finishing the round with six birdies including four on his final six holes of the morning round. He was one-under after the first round.
Ole Miss shot a 558 (-10) on Monday and holds a two-stroke lead over second-place South Alabama. South Alabama's Blake Kelley shot a two-round 133 (-9) and heads into Tuesday's final round with a two-stroke lead over Mississippi State's Chad Ramey.
Rice will play Tuesday's final round with Louisiana-Monroe and McNeese State with tee times beginning at 8:36 a.m. off the No. 10 tee.
