HOUSTON - Rice University swept doubles play then won five singles matches to beat Southern Miss 6-1 in Conference USA play at the Jake Hess Tennis Complex Saturday.
With the win, the 61st-ranked Owls improved to 11-8. Southern Miss is now 7-10.
Four of the Owls' singles points came in straight-set wins.
At No. 1, Rebekka Hanle defeated Vroni van Berlo 6-3, 6-1 while Dominqiue Harmath posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2. At No. 3, Jessica Jackson defeated Asa Bengtson 6-0, 7-5. Alex Rasch posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Zoe Lee at No. 5.
Also in singles play, Kimberly Anicete came back from an opening-set loss at No.4 to beat Elja van Berlo 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3).
