The Rice women's tennis team used a tight battle for the doubles point as the springboard for a 5-2 win over Wichita State at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Friday. The win snapped a five-match losing streak for the Owls (10-8).
"I am very proud of the fight out team showed today," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "It was great to see everyone bounce back after such a tough loss last week and I thought we competed well at every position."
For the second consecutive match, the Owls found themselves in need of a win in a tie-breaker to capture the doubles point and Rebekka Hänle and Ana Guzman delivered the point with a 9-8 win at No. 1.
After splitting the first two singles matches and holding a 2-1 lead, Rice responded to the Shockers' challenge, clinching the match with wins by Hänle and No. 2 and Kim Anicete at No. 5. Senior Jessica Jackson wrapped up the match and made the final margin 5-2 by winning a third-set, tie-break 10-2.
Rice will be back in action on Sunday morning at 11a.m. when they host C-USA rival Tulane.
