Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic Second Round Results
CHOUDRANT, La. - Michael Whitehead shot a 73 for the second straight round and with scores climbing during Monday's play, moved from 19th to a tie for seventh with 18 holes left at the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic being played at Squire Creek Country Club.
Whitehead's two-round, four-over par 146 is just three strokes off the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
After firing a 292 on Sunday, the Owls shot a 314 team score on Monday and their 606 team score puts them in eighth place.
Middle Tennessee, which jumped out to a seven-stroke lead after Sunday's play, extended its advantage to 15 strokes despite shooting a 300 on Monday. MTSU's Jason Villard, Justin Green and Simons are all tied for first with two-round scores of 143 (-1).
Louisiana Tech shot a 308 on Monday for a two-round score of 593 while Southeastern Louisiana and Missouri State are tied for third one stroke back of the host Bulldogs with 594s through Monday's play.
"We really struggled to have any consistency, especially on the back nine," said Rice coach Drew Scott about the Owls' play on Monday. "But we have an opportunity to play really well tomorrow and hopefully move up into the top five or six. That would be a real positive way to head on home and get ready for the next event."
Rice is just six strokes back of Southern Miss and Jacksonville State who are tied for fifth, and four strokes back of seventh-place South Alabama.
Rice was one player short for Monday's round. Senior Tim Pawul did not play after suffering a pulled muscle in his back during Sunday's first round. Pawul's availability to play the final round will be determined Tuesday morning. If he does play, his score for the round could still contribute to the Owls' final score. The top four individual scores from each team are taken to determine a squad's score for each round.
The Owls will tee off for Tuesday's round during the nine o'clock hour and will play with South Alabama and Texas State.
