SAN ANTONIO - Rice struggled on the final holes during the second round of the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational on Monday, slipping out of the Top 10 and finishing the day 14th after 36 holes of play at the spring season opener.
The Owls will be back on the Oak Hills Country Club course Tuesday looking to improve and move up the leaderboard. After a shotgun start on Monday, Tuesday's final round is set for tee times with the Owls playing off the No. 10 tee beginning at 8:45 a.m.
"Tomorrow, we need to take advantage of some easy opportunities and eliminate mistakes," since Rice head coach Drew Scott.
After a morning round 293 team score, the Owls were in the Top 10 of the tournament. The squad remained in the Top 10 most of the day before the squad combined to go +11 on each player's final hole. Rice shot a 303 team score during the afternoon round for a combined score of 596 (+28).
Rice senior Michael Whitehead was at even par through 35 holes before a double-bogey on his No. 12 finishing hole left him two-over par for the tournament and dropped him into a tie for 26th. He was the Owls' top finisher on Monday with a two-round score 144 on the par 71 course.
Texas Tech's Tyler Weworski shot a two-round 134 (-8) to take a one-stroke lead in the individual standings and help propel the Red Raiders to an eight-stroke lead over second-place North Texas. Texas Tech had a two-round score of 550 (-18).
Four teams finished under par on Monday. Behind Texas Tech and North Texas, Tulsa and Oklahoma are tied for third at four-under par through 36 holes. Texas State is fifth in the team standings at five-over par.
