CHOUDRANT, La. - Rice University sophomore Jeff Wibawa opened play at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate with a three-under par 69 and later shot an even par 72 to wrap up the first day of Louisiana Tech's fall tournament tied for eighth place.
Wibawa's two-round score of 141 has him five strokes back of the lead.
Sam Houston State's Scott Kelly followed up a tournament-low 66 for the morning round with a 70 later in the day and with a two-round score of 136 (-8) enjoys a three-stroke lead over Louisiana Tech's Sam Forgan and Jacksonville State's Tom Robson who are tied for second with 139s.
Southern Miss had a two-round score of 570 on Monday and has a two-stroke lead over second-place Southeastern Louisiana (572). Host Louisiana Tech is in third place (573).
Rice is currently in 11th place at the tournament. The Owls followed a morning round 298 with a 306 later in the day for a two-round score of 604.
Behind Wibawa, freshmen Tommy Economou and James Ragan had the Owls' leading scores on Monday.
Economou shot a 149 (73-76) and is currently tied for 31st while Ragan's 152 (73-79) is tied for 48th.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday at Squire Creek Country Club.
