The 30th ranked Rice men's tennis team ran their season record to 3-0 with a hard-fought 5-2 win over No. 44 Miami on the Hurricanes home court in Coral Gables, Florida on Saturday.
After taking a 1-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles matches, the Owls found themselves holding on to a 3-2 lead after splitting the first four singles matches. But junior Sam Garforth-Bles, who dropped the opening set 6-3, rallied from a 4-1 deficit in his second set to win 11 of the last 12 games and defeat Eduardo Pavia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and clinch the match.
"I was pleased about the way we competed," Rice head coach Ron Smarr said. "It's never easy to play here, and this year was no exception. Anytime you can come away from here with the win, it's an accomplishment. It was a good early test for us, and it should help get us ready for Alabama next weekend," he added.
The Owls will meet face 34th ranked Alabama in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Qualifier next Saturday in Austin, Tx.
