HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Rice improved on its play from Monday's 36 holes to make up some ground as the Owls opened the 2010-11 season tying for 13th at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate played at Hattiesburg Country Club.
"We played better but we still left a lot of shots on the golf course," said Rice head coach Drew Scott. "We did have some positives today. We didn't make as many mistakes as we did yesterday."
Rice freshman Jeff Wibawa fired a 67 to lead the Owls in the final round. He finished in a tie for 40th along with teammate Michael Whitehead. Whitehead finished play with an even-par 71. Both players shot three-round scores of 217 (+4).
Rounding out the Owls' scores Tuesday was a two-over par 73 by Robert Burrow who tied for 62nd with a 222. Erik Mayer shot a 75 to finish with a three-round score of 224 while Chris Contreras' 74 on Tuesday gave him a 227 for his first collegiate tournament.
Rice finished with a three-round score of 878 (301-291-286) to tie South Alabama for 13th. Led by Jeff Karlsson's individual championship, Kennesaw State was the team title with a three-round score of 839 (278-281-280), four strokes ahead of second-place Louisiana-Lafayette and six strokes in front of third-place Southeastern Louisiana.
Karlsson had a three-round score of 199 (65-69-65) to win the individual title by two strokes.
Scott will have a short amount of time to evaluate the squad and the members of the team who did not travel before deciding on next week's roster. The Owls will defend their 2009 UTA/Waterchase Intercollegiate title next Monday and Tuesday in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
