The Rice women's tennis took 15th ranked South Florida to the limit before the Bulls outlasted the Owls, 4-3 at the USF Varsity Courts on Friday.
"Today was a very hard-fought battle by both teams," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of this one, but we have another great opportunity tomorrow against VCU," she added.
Rice (9-7) grabbed the doubles point when 68th ranked Julie Chao and Ana Guzman bested the Bulls' 16th ranked No. 1 doubles unit of Irene Rehberger and Melissa Koning 6-4, 7-6.
South Florida grabbed three straight singles matches to take a 3-1 before Rebecca Lin struck back with a win at No. 5 and Rebekka Hänle won a straight-set victory over 41st ranked Irene Rehberger to knot things up 3-3 with only the match at No. 4 left to be decided.
After dropping the first set, Ana Guzman battled back to take the second and force a decisive third set. Ecaterina Vasenina of UCF prevailed in the final set, 7-5 to give the Bulls the win.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday when they meet Virginia Commonwealth at the USF Varsity Courts.
