Houston - Brittney Scott poured in 24 points to lead the Houston Cougars to a convincing 81-58 Conference USA women's basketball victory over Rice inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
With the loss, Rice finishes C-USA play with a 7-9 record and will be the seven seed at the 2010 GMC Sierra Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship. The Owls will play 10 seed UTEP on Monday, March 8 at 8:30 p.m. at Tulsa's Reynolds Center.
Freshman center Opal Taskila scored a career-high 16 points and 8 rebounds and Brianna Hypolite finished with 10 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Tara Watts scored 7 points and made two three-pointers, bringing her career total to 146. Watts is now two made three-pointers away from surpassing Jessica Garcia's total of 147.
Houston (16-13, 10-6) surged to an early 21-3 lead that saw the Owls with just one bucket, a Tara Watts trey, for the first 7:17 of the contest. The score was 41-16 at 3:34 and 50-23 at the half. UH's Scott scored 18 of her 24 points in the first 20 minutes, surpassing her season scoring average of 17.2 points a game. Also in double-digits in the first half were Porsche Landry (13) and Courtney Taylor (10).
Landry and Taylor each finished the evening with 14 points. Taylor also snared a game-high 14 rebounds. Reserve Roxana Button played 33 minutes and tallied 17 points.
Rice (13-16) shot 26 percent from the field in the first half and was led in scoring by sophomore Brianna Hypolite's 7 points and Watts' 6. The Cougars shot 48 percent from the field.
The Owls did outscore Houston in second-half 35 to 31.
