LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Rice University's Michael Whitehead came back from an opening round 75 to card two rounds of even par or better to finish the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic in a tie for 11th individually.
Whitehead began the day just outside the Top 20 after shooting an even par 72 on Monday afternoon on the Bear Den Course at Chenal Country Club. His one-under par 71 Tuesday gave him a 218 for the tournament. He was the Owls' top finisher.
The Owls moved up one spot during Tuesday's final round and finished ninth with a three-round score of 901 (299-297-305). Southeastern Louisiana shot a 291 team score on Tuesday to win the team title by eight strokes. Led by Stuart Ballingall's individual title, Missouri placed second with an 873 while Central Arkansas placed third with an 874.
Ballingall established a competitive course record with a 63 Monday afternoon and finished the 54-hole tournament with a 15-under par 201, capturing individual champion accolades with a 10-stroke victory.
Rice's Christopher Brown shot a three-round 224 and finished in a tie for 24th. Michael Buttacavoli paced the Owls on Monday and was one-under par heading into Tuesday's play but a final-round 85 accounted for a 228 tournament score.
The UALR tournament was the first of three in as many weeks for the Owls. The squad travels to the Ole Miss-hosted Reunion Intercollegiate next week before traveling to the Jim West Invitational set to be played April 12-13 at Victoria Country Club.
