Houston - After an improbable second-half comeback, the Rice Owls women's basketball team lost in overtime to Conference USA-leading Tulane 81-69 inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls were down by 17 points in the second-half at 43-26 (15:30) when they showed a lot of heart and effort and battled back to go outscore the Green Wave 21 to 6 to close to within one (48-47) with 7:25 on the clock.
The huge comeback was due in part to the stellar shooting display by freshman reserve Zoe Rogers. Rogers entered the contest with a total of 15 points scored on the season. Well Thursday night, Rogers was on fire in the second-half by making all nine of her field goals, including one trey, to post team-high scoring honors with 19.
Tulane was up 63-60, on a Roshaunda Barnes bucket with 18 seconds to play in regulation, when Rice head coach Greg Williams called timeout. The play he drew up found freshman guard Jessica Goswitz open on the left-wing, which she calmly swished to send the game into overtime.
Tulane (22-5, 11-3) began the first five minutes of each period Thursday evening outscoring the Owls.
The Green Wave began the game on a 7-0 run, started the second-half outscoring the Owls 14 to 4, and in overtime Tulane outscored Rice (12-15, 6-8) 12 to 4 early-on to distance itself and secure its 22nd win of the season.
Also in double-figures for Rice was Goswitz with 11 points and 4 rebounds and 2 steasls. D'Frantz Smart dished out 6 assists to go with 4 rebounds. Megan Elliott scored 9 and Tara Watts added 8 points.
Tulane was led by Olivia Grayson's 22 points. Grayson was 6-16 from the field and made 8 of 10 at the free throw line to go with 11 rebounds. Danielle Nunn poured in 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Barnes tallied 11 points.
Rice now hosts UTEP on Sat., Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. This game is also designated as the "Take a Kid to a Game" Day. Any youth gets in FREE with the purchase of an adult ticket.
